Taking Classes

How do the classes work?

Each course is divided into learning modules.   Each module will require you to complete multiple learning activities, such as a reading assignment, participation in an online discussion, writing a paper, working on an individual or group project, taking a quiz, making an online presentation, or a variety of other learning activities typical of what you'd find in any traditional class. Typically you'll need to complete all assignments and requirements of a particular module before moving on to the next.

How does the asynchronous forum work?

As discussed above, each class is made up of a number of learning modules. Each learning module requires various learning activities. One common type of online activity is the "online discussion question" where students post their replies and comments to a special posting area open only to class members. This is just like what you might do in a live class discussion in a traditional classroom. However, inasmuch as most discussions are asynchronous, meaning, students do not need to be online at the same time in order to post their discussion. The design of BWU courses allows you to post your thoughts at a time convenient for you using our Learning Management System.  You must participate during the timeline as indicated by your professor and usually the posting of a minimum number of comments and replies to other student comments is required. The course professor will guide the class discussion. Students find that this is pretty easy and they really like the flexibility of studying, writing and in this case, posting, at a time convenient to them.

Do I have to log in at certain times or a specific number of times each week?

No, you may log in any time you like, and as many or as few times each week as you find necessary to complete your assignments within the time allotted for the module by your professor.

Does BWU use learning teams in each class?

BWU does not require "learning teams" as some schools do. While an instructor may require some assignments done as a group, those groups will usually change with each class and each professor. You are responsible for your own work and that is how you will be evaluated.

Can I just take one class?

Sure, you’re welcome to take a single course or series of courses.  Our one-course per month format means you don't have to commit to a group of classes all at the same time.

How much time will I spend each week on my class?

Keep in mind that you only have one class in a given month to be "full-time" not 4-5 classes as with other schools.  However, you will need to budget enough time in order to succeed and learn from each course.  Thus and although we can’t guarantee how much time any particular individual will need to spend, most students taking online courses find that 15-25 hours per week are needed in order to accomplish the goals of a course.  You don’t spend all that time online, however.  The estimate also includes completing course reading assignments, doing research, and working on that week’s learning modules.
